Donald Gene Overton
(April 5, 1935 - January 1, 2022)

Services for Donald Gene Overton, 86, who passed away Saturday, January 1, 2022 at EveryStep Bright Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Grace Church 4200 East 25th Street, Des Moines, IA 50317 with burial following in the Des Moines Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.
Don was born to Calvin and Lena Overton on April 5, 1935. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1953. He married the love of his life, Jo Ann Polson also in 1953. Together they had three children, Mark, Cindy and Jeff. He was a loving husband, father, son, grandparent, brother, uncle and friend.
Don worked as a pressman for Ad Color Press for 24 years before moving his family to Indianola, IA in 1978 where he became the commercial printing manager for the Record Herald and Indianola Tribune. He was an expert consultant to many commercial clients. He then became a sales representative for Midwestern Paper Company, continuing his career in sales with Butler Paper, Uni Source and Georgia Pacific.
Don enjoyed an early retirement and He and JoAnn became snow birds in McAllen, TX. He became president of the Texan Mobile Home Park Association where he organized music and events for the residents. Don was an avid sportsman who loved to pheasant hunt and go on fishing trips with friends. He was also a NASCAR and sprint car racing fan, watching and attending races was a passion of his.
He was a believer in Jesus Christ, and spent many years helping to start churches, teaching Sunday school, coordinating youth events, and leading songs in church. He was a member of Grace Church, where he served as a deacon for many years. He dearly loved his family, and adored all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family and friends, and helped so many people throughout his life.
Don is survived by his wife, JoAnn; children, Mark Overton and Jeff (Michele) Overton; grandchildren, Kristy (Matt) Ryan, Justin (Sara) Overton, Nicole Clay, Tanner (Kate) Overton, Camron (Kirsten) Overton, Kellan (Christina) Overton, Cole Overton, Zac and Josh Bittinger.; great-grandchildren, Jaymin Sutton, Mabel Overton, Katelyn Ryan, Colin Ryan, Logan Ryan, Calvin Overton, Lillee Overton, Austin Clay, Avery Overton, Kenna Overton, Landon Overton, Blakely Overton and Everly Overton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Lena Overton; daughter, Cindy Bittinger and sister, Norma Kochenower.
Visitation will be held prior to services from 11 to 1 p.m. Thursday at Grace Church. Memorial gifts may be given to the family for a memorial to be decided at a later date.
