Linda was a teacher for 35 years, teaching high school English. She loved her students and was a friend and mentor to many of them. She invested a lot of energy and time into her teaching and actively sought to see her students be successful. Part of being a teacher was the three months off during the summer, and she loved spending time at the local swimming pool with her two daughters. She was an avid reader, and was a huge fan of doing puzzles on her iPad. She loved shopping, and had a very classy sense of style and taste. She was a snazzy dresser, and enjoyed decorating her home. Linda loved traveling and enjoyed her trips to the oceans very much, her time spent shelling and relaxing on the beach. Linda was fortunate to love and be married to two wonderful men during her life. After her first husband, Brad, went home to be with the Lord, and her daughters got married and started families of their own she enjoyed spending time with her two Grand-daughters, Addy and Lily – having them over to her and Ken’s home for sleep-overs, pool parties, and late nights. She also gained Jacob as a grandson, which was great for her because he could always make her laugh.
Linda was an extremely loyal, loving friend to many people and impacted many lives over the years. Whenever she was together with friends, there was laughter aplenty, multiple stories shared and many new memories created. Linda enjoyed music immensely and was a wonderful singer with a beautiful voice that she shared with many.
Note from her son-in-law Jason, who wrote most of this: I most likely used too many commas and incorrect grammar throughout. I wish Linda were here to correct me, but her talents are now being put to better use up in Heaven. “Irregardless” (love you Linda!), she will be greatly missed and we as her family are more at peace knowing she is at home with her Lord in Heaven.
Survivors include her husband, Ken Tomes; daughters, Hilary (Jason) Prall, Ashley (Ryan) Hall; grandchildren, Addyson and Lilyan Hall and Jacob Herrera; siblings, Janette Ryan-Busch and Gary (Richard Hoblock) Garrels and her extended family. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Brad Holtgrewe and parents, DeWayne and Ova Garrels.
Memorials may be given in her name to Southeast Polk Dollars for Scholars. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
