(January 6, 1926 - June 20, 2022)Services for Ruth Lenore (Richards) Henry, 96, of rural Indianola, IA, who passed away Monday, June 20, 2022 at home, will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Farmers Chapel United Methodist Church 9020 160th Ave. Indianola, IA, 50125 with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Ruth was born January 6, 1926 west of Indianola and the fourth child of Wesley and Irene (McAdoo) Richards. Ruth grew up in Northboro, Iowa. She graduated from Northboro High School and attended Maryville College in Missouri for two years then taught in a one room country school house for one year where she stoked the fire and rode a horse to school. She then taught in Farragut, Iowa for two years. By then she had saved enough money to return to college where she graduated in 1950 with a degree in elementary education. Upon graduation Ruth taught for three years in Des Moines, IA. She married Edwin Roy Henry June 29, 1952. After raising her four children on the farm near Indianola, Ruth renewed her teaching certificate at Simpson College and taught school at Hawthorne Elementary for the next 20 years before retiring in 1988.Ruth was the organizational leader for Cloverleaf 4-H Club for 10 years, was active in United Methodist Women, Warren County Genealogical Society, Warren County Farm Bureau Women and Log Cabin Days where she and her husband, Edwin were King and Queen of the 2006 Warren County Heritage Festival/Log Cabin Days. She was a member of Farmers Chapel United Methodist Church.
Ruth and Edwin always enjoyed traveling and after her retirement, they spent a few months of the winter in Arizona, California and Florida for more than 25 years. She loved her family, genealogy, gardening, baking, sewing, reading and her church.
Preceded in death by her son Allen Henry; parents; brothers, Morris, Warren, Clarence and Ross, sisters-in-law Helen Richards, Ruth Richards, Clarice Richards and Phyllis Richards; father and mother-in-law, Roy and Ruth Henry. Survived by her husband of 70 years; children: Carol (Mark) McBride of Manchester, Tennessee, Marilyn (Mark) Goodhue of Carlisle, Keith (Marie) and daughter-in-law Cindy of Indianola; sister, Mary (Warren) Tiemann of Westboro, Missouri, and brother John (Ruth) Richards of Coon Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Amanda (Tim) Nelson, Blake (Rachelle) Henry, Hannah (Joe) Byers, Matthew (Amanda) McBride, Andrew (Katie) McBride, Stephen (Megan) McBride, , Ki’a Goodhue, Summer (Doug) Muetzel, Samantha Goodhue, Lexie (Tyler) Dollison, Allison (Cody) Miller, Megan (Andrew) Carlson, Jordan Henry; great grandchildren, Amanda (Casey) McKasson, A.J. (Bailey) Nelson, Meredith McBride, Halle Byers, Levi McBride, Oliver Henry, Harlee Dollison, Henry Miller, Hoyt Byers, Joanna McBride, Silas McBride, Holden Miller, Miles McBride, Stormi Henry with two more on the way; great-great grandchildren, Dylan, Aubrey and Hudson McKasson, Tucker and Teddy Nelson.
Ruth’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the “yellow team” at Suncrest Hospice for their kindness, support, and care during Ruth’s final days of her transition to her eternal home.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2022 at Famers Chapel United Methodist Church with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Farmers Chapel United Methodist Church.
