Lewis Dewey Mullins, son of Franklin and Amanda Mullins was born near Red Rock, Iowa and departed this life May 8, 1947 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Zelma Maholic, west of Russell. His age at passing was 79 years, 1 month, and 9 days. He was united in marriage Jan. 27, 1897 to Mary Catherine Feight at Chariton and they established their residence on a farm near Newbern. To this union were born five children, Vernie of near Newbern, Mrs. Maudie Roberts of Dallas, Mrs. Zelma Maholic of near Chariton and Raymond of Knoxville. His wife passes away on June 8, 1941. He suffered a heart attack a week previous from which he never recovered. His children were with him throughout his short illness, and were a comfort to him. He was conscious to the last and peacefully went to meet his maker. Beside the children he leaves to mourn his passing two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Worth of Monroe, Mrs. Mae Graves of Chariton. There are also 20 grandchildren besides a host of neighbors and friends who will feel a deep loss in his passing from this life. The funeral was held at the Newbern Federated Church at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon under the direction of Rev. Virgil Swanson and burial was made in the Newbern Cemetery.
