Mrs. Margaret Ann Gunter
Margaret Ann Newman, daughter of Phillip and Julia Ann Newman, was born Dec. 4, 1831, and departed from this life Feb. 27, 1924, at the age of 92 years, 2 months, and 23 days. She was born in the state of Ohio, coming with her parents to Iowa in 1845 and resided near Attica, Marion County, until 1852, when she moved to Newbern which place has since been her home. She was one of a family of twelve children, having three sisters and eight brothers, all of whom have preceded her in death except one brother and one sister, David of Newbern, and Cassinda Mason of Peoria, Oregon. She married on May 8th, 1851 to Noah Bonebrake. To this union were born twelve children, five of whom are left to mourn the loss of their beloved mother, George of Melcher; Ted of near Chariton; Mrs. Lillie Goodwin of near Newbern; and Wesley of Glenwood. Her husband died Oct 6, 1873. In 1885 she was again united in marriage to E. E. Gunter, who died July 2, 1902. She was converted when a girl and joined the United Brethren church at Attica, later transferring her membership to the United Brethren church at Newbern. Though of a quiet and unassuming disposition, Aunt Margaret was ever found faithfully doing her Master’s will and when the summons came she passed peacefully into the rest which she so well deserved. Besides the brother, sister, and children mentioned above, she leaves to mourn her loss a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives, who had learned to love Aunt Margaret for her many kindly deeds and her presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held at the Newbern Federated church, conducted by Rev. C. C. Swalwell, of the Nazarene Church of Mason, and the remains were laid to rest in the Newbern Cemetery.
