C. Douglas Hess
Christopher Stephen A. Douglas Hess was born March 6, 1864 in Ringgold County, Iowa, and died August 14, 1944 at his home in Milo, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 8 days. His father, mother and a brother, Charley, preceded him in death. A sister, Mrs. Mary Moon of McAllan, Texas, and a brother, John of Missouri and several nieces and nephews survive. On January 17, 1889 he was married to Elizabeth H. Moon, and their home was established on a farm, south west of Milo, where he lived for several years, later moving to Milo. To this family were born three children, all preceding him in death: Dottie, who passed away in infancy; Meldia, at the age of 13 and Alma Royce at 27. Two grandchildren, Arlene Royce, 8, and Ivan, 5, then made their home with their grandparents. Being convinced of the truthfulness of the gospel, he was baptized October 12, 1899 into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, believing in their teaching until the last and said he was ready to go. He worked as he was able with his faithful companion, but suffered for many years with a heart ailment, which was the cause of his death. Being of a happy disposition he had many friends, which are the reward of a good honest man. The bereaved wife and grandchildren have the sympathy of the community. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Union Church by the Elder Frank A. Fry, pastor of the Re-organized Latter Day Saints Church of Des Moines, Iowa and the Rev. J. W. Garbison, pastor of the Christian Union Church. Music was furnished by Murrel Trotter, Homer Hornaday, John Kimzey, and Murrel Garbison, accompanied by Mrs. Lora Davey. Burial was at the I. O. O. F. Cemetery. Out of town people who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Bert Fetters and Frank, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Park, Mr. and Mrs. Elden Hayworth and family, Mrs. Carrie Long, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Flesher, John Kimzey and Homer Hornaday of Indianola; Mrs. Ivie Beck and Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Hess of Kansas.
