Obituary – E. M. Beery
Emanuel M. Beery died at his home in Norwalk, Iowa, at 1:20 a.m. Friday, December 11, 1914, after a short illness. The funeral services were held Saturday, December 12th and interment was in the cemetery of that city. Mr. Beery was born in Bremen, Fairfield County, Ohio, August 27th, 1843. He was a descendant of Nicholas Beery who landed at Port Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Switzerland, October 16, 1727. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1854, and settled on a prairie farm near Norwalk and near where was his home the remainder of his life except the time spent in the army and as a settler in Nebraska in the early seventies. On the 19th of August, 1862 he enlisted in Company H, 34th Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served faithfully three years. He was mustered out on August 15th, 1865. On March 28, 1869 he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Hester, who with a son, R. E. Beery, of Norwalk, survives him. Besides these he leaves six sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Mary Herring, Mrs. Barbara Harrod, Mrs. Sadie Fish, Mrs. Ellen Brown, Mrs. Rose Casady, George Beery of Norwalk, Mrs. Rebecca Frazier of Dexter, Kansas, and C. H. Beery of Eureka Springs, Utah. For twelve years Mr. Beery served as postmaster of his city. He always took an active interest in everything which he thought was for the betterment of his town and county. He labored well and his “works will follow him.”
Mr. Beery joined the Methodist church thirty years ago and he expressed a willingness to go and be with his Lord. Rev. G. W. Wood, of Fort Des Moines, a former pastor, and Rev. W. A. Bonnar, pastor of the Norwalk Methodist Church, conducted the funeral services.
