Amanda H. Hamilton
(February 14, 1842 – September 14, 1925)

Mrs. Amanda Hayes Hamilton, mother of Mrs. Dr. H. J. Smith, formerly of Indianola, died at the home of Dr. Smith in Adel September 14. Mrs. Hamilton had reached the ripe age of 83 years and seven months. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee, February 14, 1842. At the age of 11 years she came to Appanoose County, with her widowed mother and settled on a homestead two miles south of Moravia, where the hardships of pioneer life developed in her a virile, resourceful, and loving womanhood. She remained a resident of Appanoose County for 66 years. On September 10, 1874, she was married to James Hamilton, who preceded her in death six years. Since his death she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Dr. Smith, with whom she moved to Adel last spring. She was the mother of five children, four of whom are living. She also leaves 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. After a year in the home of her daughter she sustained a broken hip and a paralytic stroke, since which time she has been a sufferer, requiring constant care, which was lovingly bestowed upon her. Through all of her affliction she was patient and brave. She enjoyed the use of her mental faculties up to the end, which came in quiet sleep. She was the last of her mother’s family. Soon after coming to Iowa she joined the Moravian church, and after marriage transferred her membership to the Methodist church at Wesley chapel five miles south of Moravia, where final services were held September 16th, after which she was laid to rest beside her husband in the cemetery nearby.
