Fred Bumgarner
(January 3, 1891 – July 27, 1946)

Fred Bumgarner, son of William and Lydia Bumgarner, was born near Cool Jan 3, 1891, and died at his home near Liberty Center July 27, 1946 at the age of 55 years, 6 months and 24 days. He was united in marriage to Leona Williams of Norwood Jan 11, 1915. To this union were born seven children: Raymond Wendell who died Aug. 30, 1925, at the age of 9 years; Marjorie, Helen, Darl, and Freddie who died Aug. 24, 1941, at the age of 14 years; Joan and Caryll. He was one of a family of nine children. He was preceded in death by his two sons, his father and mother and three sisters, Mrs. Carrie McGriff of California, Mrs. Sylvia Sandy of Nevada and Mrs. Maud Townsend of Des Moines. Most of his married life was spent on a farm west of Liberty Center, where he was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to any neighbor in need of assistance. His everyday living was one of service for his loved ones. He was indeed a kind, loving husband and devoted father. His least wearisome days were brightened by the presence of his two little grandsons, Gary and Freddie Lawrence. His health had been failing for over two years but he was ever cheerful and considerate of the ones caring for him, and the memories of his love and devotion will always be cherished by his family. Those surviving are his wife, Leona: five children, Marjorie Taylor, Helen Lawrence, Darl, Joan, Caryll; two grandsons, Gary and Freddie Lawrence; three sisters, Stella Irving of Lacona, Hallie Hite of Liberty Center and Pearl Brandt of Des Moines; two brothers, Levi of Liberty Center and William of Lacona; two sons-in-law, George Taylor of Liberty Center and Paul Lawrence, serving in the army overseas; one daughter-in-law, Elaine Bumgarner; and many other relatives and friends.
Let me live in a house by the side of the road, where the race of men go by. The men who are good, and the men who are bad, as good and as bad as I. I would not sit in the scorner’s seat or hurl the cynic’s ban. Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man. I see from my house by the side of the road by the side of the highway of life, the men who press with the ardor of hope, the men who are faint with the strife, but I turn not away from their smiles nor their tears, both parts of an infinite plan. Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Liberty Center Monday afternoon, July 29, conducted by the Rev. Reed Kessler of Lorimor. Interment was in Liberty Center Cemetery.
