Dan Showalter Fatally Hurt
Carlisle, June 22 – Dan Showalter, 65, was fatally injured Friday morning when he was struck by a passenger train northeast of Carlisle. Mr. Showalter was walking from his country home into town. As he approached the crossing he became interested in the freight train on a side track and failed to hear or see the passenger train coming from the north. Both feet were mangled and he received a severe cut on the head. He was moved to the doctor’s office here and then rushed to the Des Moines General Hospital where his feet were amputated. He died shortly after noon. Funeral services and burial were in Oskaloosa. Mr. Showalter had lived alone the past few years on his farm, formerly known as the Albert Grossnickle farm. His niece from St. Augustine, Fla., was here to spend the summer with him.
