George Grant Amos
(May 5, 1869 – May 21, 1946)

George Grant Amos, son of James and Mary Amos, was born May 5, 1869, near Milo in Otter Township. He spent his entire life within five miles of the place of his birth. He died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday, May 21, at the age of 77 years and 16 days. His death came as a shock to his family and a wide circle of friends who had esteemed him highly because of his industry, integrity and citizenship. He was one of the most widely known farmers in Warren County and his reputation as a farmer and breeder of fine livestock extended out over the state. Mr. Amos was united in marriage to Mary E. Chumbley, daughter of Joseph and Lou Chumbley, Aug. 18, 1896. To this union were born six children: Nellie Hutchcroft, Des Moines; Nora Martin, St. Charles; Howard and Charles, Indianola; and two who died in infancy. Besides the four living children, Mr. Amos is survived by his wife, seven grandsons; one great granddaughter; one brother, Sherman Amos, Indianola; three sisters, Mrs. Lorena Butler, Indianola, Mrs. Alice Middleton, Omaha, and Mrs. Mary Worthly, of Sask., Canada. In 1894 he was converted and baptized under the leadership of the Rev. Charles Flesher at Browns Chapel Methodist Church. His entire life was devoted to the labors of his choice, those of farming and of a breeder of Herford cattle. In these fields he has a record of honest effort and personal integrity. His great interest was in raising find Herefords. [Copied from a scrapbook at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa]
