Julia A. Hayes
(April 12, 1832 – March 3, 1923)

Julia A. Duncan was born in Franklin County, Illinois, April 12, 1832. She was married to Cyrus Hayes at Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1854 and they started west across the plains in 1862 with their three children. The emigrant train consisted of 150 wagons according to an account given in a history of Harney County wherein her late husband’s biography is written. A part of this train separated at Odgen [Boone County, IA], some going to California while the others continued on to Oregon. At the point on the Snake River where Huntington now stands they were attacked by the Indians and there lost their team. They wintered at Auburn, Baker County [Oregon], going the following spring to Boise basin but going on that same fall to Lane County this state [Oregon], where Mr. Hayes entered land and engaged in farming until 1874 when they moved to Lake County where they lived until the death of Mr. Hayes in 1887. After his death Mrs. Hayes came to Harney Valley where her son Scott had already settled. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hayes; four of whom survive her; Mary C. Hill of Denio, George W. Hayes of Vale; M. B. and L. B. Hayes living in Burns. The three sons were at her bedside when the end came. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Louise Stewart, who resides at Eugene; many relatives in Iowa, her several grandchildren and great-grandchildren in this vicinity, and numerous other relatives in Oregon.
The funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church Sunday afternoon by Rev. C. A. Waterhouse. During his discourse he announced that “Grandma” Hayes had united with the Methodist church early in her life and had remained a loyal, faithful Christian throughout her long life. The service was attended by one of the largest congregations ever assembled in recent years on a similar occasion. She was laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery [Burns Cemetery, Harney County, Oregon]. – The Times-Herald, Burns, Oregon.
