Mary E. Hunt
(March 3, 1857 – October 31, 1923)

Mrs. Mary E. Hunt, who has been visiting the past three weeks at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. W. H. Berry, died very suddenly Saturday night at ten o’clock at the home of her niece, Mrs. Perry Simmerman, ten miles south of Indianola, where she had gone for a week end visit. She was the third of the five children of Capt. And Mrs. B. C. Berry, and she with her two older brothers, W. H. Berry and J. V. Berry, have all died very suddenly from heart trouble within the past nine months. Mrs. Hunt was born in Cass County, Illinois, March 3rd, 1857, and came to Iowa with her parents in the spring of 1867. After a short residence in Des Moines, they settled on a farm two miles north of Indianola, where she lived until her marriage. She attended Simpson College for a time, and in 1885 was married to Zimri Hunt, who died in 1901. To them were born four children, Mrs. Helen Maas and Ben C. Hunt, of Seattle, Wash., Frank B. Hunt and John Hunt of Emmett, Idaho, all of whom survive her, the two latter being here for the funeral. She also leaves a brother, Frank C. Berry, of Emmett.
In 1909 she moved to Emmett, Idaho, where she made her home with her brother until going to California last winter. A little over a year ago she was severely injured by a fall which it was supposed at the time would be fatal. While she recovered from the injury to a considerable extent, her heart was left in such condition that she had known for some time that death might come at any minute. Nevertheless, her customary good spirits prevailed to the last. Only a couple of days before her death she told a friend that she realized she was living on borrowed time and she wanted to make that time as cheerful as possible for those about her since the future held no shadows. At an early age she was converted and joined the Methodist church, of which she remained throughout her life an active member. Life brought to her much of disappointment, responsibility, and severe toil, none of which ever shook her faith, her good cheer or her love. She lived a life of helpfulness. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the home of her nephew, Don. L. Berry; interment by the side of her husband in Indianola Cemetery. The service was in charge, of Rev. A. S. Woodard, with the principal address by Dr. E. M. Holmes, who was her last pastor in Indianola.
