Mary F. Smith
(April 14, 1844 – August 29, 1923)

Mrs. Theadore Smith
Mary F. Scott was born in Putnam County, Ind., April 14, 1844. She died August 29, 1923, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frona Himstreet. She was 79 years, 4 months and 29 days old. Her parents came to Pleasantville when she was about 9 years of age. Later she and her husband moved to Sandyville. On October 3, 1870, she was married to Theadore W. Smith. Eight children were born to them: Mrs. Zora Trueblood, Indianola; Mrs. Della Irving, Columbia; Mrs. Trude Thorn, Indianola; Mrs. Cassie McGriff, Des Moines; Mrs. Charity Roe, Argona, Kansas; Mrs. Frona Himstreet, Indianola; Carl who died in December 1916; and George A. Smith, Des Moines. Her husband died in April 17, 1914, since which time Mrs. Smith has made her home with her children. For some four years she has been chronically ill, but has been quite cheerful and patient, often remarking that Jesus was her savior and that she was trusting in him to go with her all the way. The years of her affliction excepting the last two months, were spent with her daughter, Mrs. Della Irving. Besides her immediate family, Mrs. Smith leaves to mourn her loss, thirty-two grandchildren, her brother Joseph Scott and many, many friends. The passing of a good woman always grieves those whom her life has touched. Although we cannot understand why these partings must be, we may be certain that God knows best; perhaps they are his way of keeping us close to him. Funeral was held at Fair View church, near Cool, conducted by N. D. Gordon, Thursday afternoon, August 30. Interment in the Indian Valley cemetery.
