Obituary – Mrs. Loyd H. VanPatten
Mabel Zella Lynn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Lynn was born December 14, 1896, at Jay, Iowa. On December 25, 1918, she was married to Loyd H. VanPatten. Last Monday, December 8, a darling baby boy, Eldon Lynn, came to bless their home and briefly after his advent, as the flickering of a candle, her life passed from mortality. Besides her devoted husband and little son, there are left to mourn her departure, mother, father, and brother, of Jay, Iowa; sister, Mrs. Ethel Swanson, of Davenport, Iowa, and the dear ones at the home of her father-in-law, George VanPatten, where she lived and filled the place of a daughter and sister, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a vast host of sincere friends.
The environment under which she grew developed a lovable and forceful Christian character. She joined the Bethel Chapel church at the age of fifteen years. She lived steadfast to the determination to lead the Christian life and those who knew her best, loved her best. It is not enough to say, Mabel was respected by all, for she was admired. During her short severe illness she was very patient and causes us to say with the poet: No time for a last farewell, no time for the shock of fear, scarcely a moment’s halt on the shore, with the guide and the boatman near – Dear, how surprised you were to go, with little to suffer, little to know, only the moment of dark, a dream of the fleeting night, and then the beautiful break of day and the quiet peace of light; and you found yourself where you longed to stand, in the repose of the Fatherland.
The body was beautifully laid to rest Thursday morning in the Bethel Chapel cemetery after services conducted at Bethel Chapel church by their pastor from Medora, Rev. N. F. Lister. Let her passing cause us all to reflect and say, “We cannot bring her back but we may go to her.”
Card of Thanks – Loyd H. VanPatten and family wish to express their thanks and appreciation to the many friends and neighbors for their sympathy and assistance during their bereavement.
