Robert Stephen Long
(May 21, 1953 - October 13, 2019)

Robert Stephen Long passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Robert was born on May 21, 1953 to Thomas and May Long. He was born in England while his father Thomas Long served in the war. They later moved to New York after the service where they planted roots. They eventually moved to Virginia where Robert graduated high school. Robert spent several years as a carpet installer in Virginia and Texas. Robert, his brother Paul, and their father Thomas started their own carpet business while in Texas. Robert married Carol Jansen in 1979 and they later gave birth to their first-born son Andrew. They eventually moved back to Vienna, Virginia where Robert continued as a carpet installer. He worked for Miles Carpet as a shop manager. He loved working for Miles and helping him on the weekends at his personal acreage. Robert and Carol moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1990. After their move, Robert spent several years working at Brand Hydraulics in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked his way up to a management position and was very proud to be a part of the team at Brand Hydraulics. Robert and Carol gave birth to their second child, Mikala Long, in 1995 and were extremely excited to have a daughter. Toward the end of his working career, Robert worked part-time at both UPS (13 years) & Casey's General Store. In 2016 Robert moved to Des Moines, Iowa to be closer to his family. He enjoyed several trips including seeing his daughter graduate from college, being at his sister Krissy's wedding and making a trip to Green Bay to watch his beloved Packers. In 2017 Robert took the crossing guard job with the Carlisle Police Department. He loved serving as the crossing guard and the community loved him with many thanks, gifts and kind words of appreciation. Robert is known for his impeccable work ethic, dedication to his family and willingness to help others.
Robert is survived by his ex-wife Carol Jansen, son Andrew (Amy) Long, daughter Mikala Long, sister Krissy (JC) Francis; cousins, Charlie, John and Paula; nephews, Cory (Tina) Long, Adam Long; nieces, Jessica Long, Erica Long, Emily Long and Sarah Long. Robert was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Long, mother, May Long, brother, Paul Long, cousin, Gary Long, nephew, Matthew Long and uncle, Matt Long. Memorials for Robert may be directed to the Carlisle Police Department.
