Richard was the youngest of 7 siblings, born in Kincaid, Illinois. William, Lester, Dorothy, Margarete, twins Frank & Mary and Richard. His father William suffered a broken back in the coal mines and passed away when Richard was 7 leaving his mother Effie to raise the brood. As the children got older and left home Richard was determined to go with his brothers and join the Air Force. Saved his money from shining shoes and setting pins in the local bowling alley he bought a train ticket to California. He called his mother after he arrived in California, enlightened her on his plans and promised he’d stay in touch. His brother Frank told him where to enlist but after that, he was on his own. Bad eyesight and flat feet caused him to be very clever to pass the exam by memorizing the last line on the eye chart as he heard it repeated down the line, evaded proving his age until he was 17, very determined for a 16 year old kid that had never been out of Kincaid.
After the military, he followed his brother Lester to Des Moines, Iowa and started managing two Standard Oil stations with his future brother-in-law Bill Butts. Following with long career of 32 years with Prudential Insurance. During that time, he decided to take dance lessons and needed a partner, Hello Anita Fox! After dancing together it became clear that they were more than just “dance partners”! Hence on August 20, 1988 Richard and Anita married and the song ”Cab Driver” was their most requested song! After retiring he joined the guys at True Value Hardware followed by 14yrs at Path Lab as a delivery driver.
