French M. Martin (March 18, 1874 - July 4, 1876)Weekly Indianola Herald, Thursday, Jul 13, 1876, Indianola, IA, Page: 2
IN MEMORIAM
Twenty-two years ago, July 4th, I. P. C. Martin and Nancy Jane Auld were joined in marriage at her father’s residence, near Iberia, Ohio. For twenty-two years they have journeyed along life’s pathway together, sharing in its joys and sorrows. On the twenty-second anniversary they have remained at home, and gathered their friends to join them in celebrating that anniversary day. It was a time of joy and pleasure as they spent the day together, and in the evening separated all in the enjoyment of health and strength. But in a few short hours what a change. She, who on that day was in the enjoyment of robust health, with every prospect of many more years in this world, was sleeping the sleep of death. She with other members of the family had risen when the storm came on, and she, with her child in her arms, was preparing to follow her husband out of the house when the whole structure was blown to pieces, and a wardrobe falling upon her and her child ended their lives. The remaining children, five in number, were saved by taking refuge in the same wardrobe that ended Mrs. Martin and child’s life.
The upper end of the wardrobe rested on a bedstead thus offering sufficient room and security beneath for protection of family. Mr. Martin who had gotten out was blown some distance and when he became conscious and returned all was in ruins. He supposed Mrs. Martin was safe with the children when he learned of their security, and the children supposed she was with him, so it was sometime before the discovery was made that she and child were dead. Assistance was soon procured and the bodies taken out of the ruins and carried to neighbors, and next morning brought to the residence of Mr. S. Martin in town. On Thursday morning after appropriate funeral exercises the bodies were conveyed to the cemetery followed by a large crowd of sympathizing friends and neighbors.
