He was born July 31, 1926 in rural Warren County Iowa near Ackworth. He was the fourth child of Jahu and Fannie Hadley. He was preceded by brother Lester (Garnet) Hadley, sister Vera (Ted) Cutler and sister Thelma (Paul) Perisho. He spent the first few years of his life in the Warren County area. In 1933 the family purchased a farm and moved to New Providence. Here they were very involved in the Honey Creek Friends meeting. In 1944 he graduated from New Providence high school.
Soon after graduation he was drafted but being a Quaker he was registered as a conscientious objector. He was called to report to duty in Trenton, North Dakota CPS (Civilian Public Service) Camp and later in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. He was unexpectedly released and called home to help on the farm. Not long after, his father died and he was left to manage the farm.
In 1947 he married Hazel Hadley and began their life together on the farm. While they were on the farm daughters Shelia and Becky were born as well as an infant son Roddy who lived only a short time. They struggled to make the farm work and in 1954 they moved to Indianola. The next few years also were very difficult. Infant son Daniel was born and he lived only a short time also. Not long after Edwin became ill and was unable to work for some time. But recovery did happen and he went to work at Superior Art Glass company where he spent the rest of his working years leaving his mark on Iowa. He made and restored many stained glass windows. He was an artist as well, designing as well as constructing windows. He designed the windows for the Jewish Retirement home and he helped rebuild the rose window in the dome of the downtown First Methodist Church both in Des Moines. Towards the end of his work career he was in charge of rebuilding the large window for the Iowa Governor’s mansion. He worked on many other beautiful windows and other stained glass projects.
After retirement he and Hazel spent about 10 years RV traveling with MMAP, Mobile Missionary Assistance Program. They traveled all over the US volunteering on construction projects, remodeling of church camps and churches. Teaching and living God’s word along the way.
His whole life Edwin was active in the local church, Iowa Yearly Meeting, Quaker Men and especially Camp Quaker Heights church camp. There he spent many hours on upkeep of the camp grounds and facilities.
His family was very important to him. He and Hazel were married for 71 years … together always, best friends, working together. He loved his daughter Shelia (Jerry) and grandson Brett (Heidi) and children London, Leighton and Edyn, grandson Jeff; his daughter Becky (Gary) and granddaughter Danielle (Lee Gudith) and children Jacob and Brooklyn and his granddaughter Melissa (Luke Bishop) and daughters Chloe and Esti. Many nieces and nephews. He was deeply concerned for their faith and care. Always willing to give a helping hand.
He loved his families but his greatest love was for his heavenly Father. He had a strong faith and wanted all who he came in contact with to know Jesus. We will miss him but we will see him again in Glory with our Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel; children, Shelia (Jerry) Keisel, Rebecca (Gary) Septer; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; children, Roddy, Daniel Hadley; grandchild, Todd Keisel; siblings, Lester Hadley, Vera Cutler, Thelma Perisho. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
