Larry Dean Turner Jr.
(May 2, 1935 - June 30, 2019)

A visitation for Larry Dean Turner, Jr., 84, of Indianola, who passed away June 30, 2019, will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, July 5 at Overton Funeral Home, Indianola. Private interment of cremains will be held at a later date.
Lawrence Dean Turner, Jr. was born on May 2, 1935, to Vera and Lawrence Turner in Omaha, Nebraska. He was the second of their five children. Larry attended Tech High School.
Larry met Marge Meeks in October of 1952 in Omaha, Nebraska. The two immediately hit it off and began dating. Their first Christmas together Larry bought Marge a HUGE teddy bear.
They were married on February 28, 1953. They had a small wedding at the Covenant Presbyterian Church Manse in Omaha with Reverend Brown performing the ceremony.
While living in Omaha, they welcomed their first daughter, Evelyn Kaye, on August 16, 1954. Their second child, also a girl, Karen Ann, was born on September 2, 1956 and their first son was born on December 31, 1958, Ty Randall. Larry was offered a job at IBM in San Jose, California. In June of 1966, they packed up their family and moved to sunny California. In California, they had another son, Timothy Lee, born on May 17, 1967. After living in California for about a year, a job opening became available in Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to Indianola in 1967 to be closer to home and raise their family in the Midwest.
June of 1991 Larry retired from IBM after 30 years. After spending a few months inside during the winter they decided to go south for a few months to get warm. They ended up in a small town in South Texas called Weslaco. They liked it so much that they decided to purchase a mobile home the following year. Over the next 20 years they spent many Iowa winters in Texas and Arizona. They loved the sunny days, palm trees, and spending time with their friends.
2003, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by going to Hawaii. Later that summer they had a family gathering with their children and grandchildren. It was a perfect day, they grilled steaks and had a delicious anniversary cake. In 2018 they had a gathering for their 65th year of marriage with family and friends at Vintage Hill Coop, where they have lived the last 7 years.
Larry enjoyed fishing, playing pool and poker. Another favorite past time was gardening and giving each of his grandchildren tractor rides. Larry had a great sense of humor; he loved to tell jokes and make others laugh. Both he and Marge like to spend time with their children and grandchildren as they are very proud of all of them. He was truly one of a kind and will be dearly missed by his wife of 66 years, children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Marge; children Evelyn (Wayne, preceded) Halterman of Des Moines, IA, Ty (Carrie) Turner of Des Moines, IA, and Tim (Holly) Turner of Waconia, MN; grandchildren; Danielle (Torrey Thomas) Watson and Michael (Jeff) Watson of Des Moines, IA, Brady (Chanel Lyons) Turner of Lakeville, MN, McKenna Turner and Caden Turner of Waconia, MN; Rusty Horstman of Des Moines, IA; Rose (Charlie) Formaro of Salt Lake City, UT; and great-grandchild; Bailee Watson of Des Moines.
