Jeanne was born September 6, 1920 to Cecil C. and Nellie M. Clevenger. She lived her entire life in the Indianola, Iowa area. She married Earl W. King, December 23, 1939. Six children were born to this union: Linda Parker (Bill) of Yuma, AZ; Ben King (Margaret) of Indianola, IA; Steve King of Indianola, IA; Carole Bayeur-Dawson of Ankeny, IA; Joy (Bill) Leggett of Indianola, IA; and Julie (Tim) Bantz of Des Moines, IA. She so loved her 6 children, 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Jeanne’s teen years were fraught with illness. She spent many weeks in Iowa City Hospital fighting pneumonia. She missed moving on to the next grade in school due to her extended absence. She recovered, and went on be voted All-Round Girl Athlete and become a member of the National Honor Society at Indianola High School. After high school she enjoyed pitching for a newly formed women’s Softball League at Jefferson Heights. Her favorite baseball movie was “A League of Their Own”. She was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan, and was very thankful that she lived long enough to see them win the 2016 World Series.
During her life Jeanne taught in a one-room country school at Mt. Moriah, worked on the farm, raised her children, taught Sunday School and Junior Church, served in the Women’s Fellowship at Fairview Christian Union Church, and held several board positions in both the local church and State Christian Union. Earl and Jeanne moved to Indianola in 1990, and they enjoyed bowling at Indianola Lanes and traveling with friends to bowling tournaments. They also were very active in Odd Fellows and Rebecca membership activities, where Jeanne became Noble Grand, the Rebecca’s highest office. Jeanne served meals on wheels, donated many gallons of blood to the Blood Bank, and remained active in her church until she was physically unable. Recently she was a resident of Vintage Hills assisted living memory care.
Jeanne is survived by her sister, Norma Goering; sister-in-law, Nadine Johnson Olson; children, Linda (Bill) Parker, Ben (Margaret) King, Steve King, Carole Bayeur-Dawson, Joy (Bill) Leggett, and Julie (Tim) Bantz; 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Nellie; husband, Earl King; sisters, Lenoir Clevenger, Lois Wellons, and Ruth Oxenreider; brothers, Bert and Homer Clevenger; son-in-law, John Dawson; and daughter-in-law, Diane King.
The visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 5 at Overton Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to Fairview Community Church, LifeServe Blood Center or Taylor House Hospice.
