Mrs. Millie Bowles, eldest daughter of Albert C. and Susan D. Ralph, was born September 12, 1868, in Warren County. Except for a few months she has lived all her life in this county. She was 66 years, three months and 15 days old when she died. On December 25, 1887, she was united in marriage to John W. Bowles. To this union four sons were born. Two died in infancy. In January of 1920, John Leland, while attending college at Ames, Iowa, took pneumonia and died suddenly. The fourth son, Paul I., is still living. Thirty years of their married life was spent in Lacona. For twenty years of this time, Mrs. Bowles and her sister, Mae, owned and operated a department store in Lacona. After the store was destroyed by fire, Mr. and Mrs. Bowles moved back to the farm. Those left to mourn her death includes her husband, her son and family, her mother, two sisters, and three brothers. In 1904 she was made a member of the Lacona Methodist Episcopal Church. Here she has served faithfully, as she was able. [Copied from a scrapbook at the Warren County Historical Society Library.
