Betty Evelyn Eckert
(October 28, 1925 - April 5, 2018)

Services for Betty Evelyn Eckert, 92, who passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018, will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with visitation held from 9 to 11 a.m., prior to service. Cremation will follow services with burial of cremains in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery at a later date.
Betty was born on a farm near Lacona, Iowa on October 28, 1925. She was the thirteenth of fourteen children born to Charles and Abby (Miller) Edgington. Betty lived most of her life in Warren County Iowa. She attended high school at Liberty Center where she enjoyed playing six-on-six basketball. Her coach nicknamed her as “Slim”, a memory she loved to share with her grandchildren. She was a homemaker and volunteered at the Helping Hand in Indianola for many years.
She met the love of her life, Gail “Jack” Eckert through a mutual friend. On June 5, 1942, after six short months of courtship, they were married in Princeton, Missouri. Together they raised four amazing sons, Stan, Steven, Kenneth and Roger. They lived in Dallas County Iowa for a while before buying an acreage in Hartford in1968. They were married for 39 years when Jack passed away in 1981, the result of a drunk driving accident. She moved to Indianola, Iowa to be closer to her sisters after Jack died and stayed there for 25 years before moving to Ankeny, Iowa in 2009.
She enjoyed growing a large vegetable garden that she shared with family and neighbors. There was always plenty left over to can for later use. When she wasn’t in the garden, she loved to quilt and sew. She made so many quilts and comforts, she lost track of the exact number. She enjoyed reading, watching birds (nature in general) and traveling. Sunday afternoon car rides to places she held close in her memories were a favorite. She was a fierce BINGO player at the Altoona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she called home since a fall in 2016. More than anything else, she loved spending time with her family. Being with family made each day complete!
Betty is survived by her sons; Stan (Sue) Eckert of Ed Couch, Texas; Ken (Chris) Eckert of Altoona, Iowa and Roger (Barb) Eckert of Des Moines, Iowa; sister-in-law, Sherry Eckert; 24 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great grandchildren.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents; Charles and Abby Edgington, all 13 of her brothers and sisters; Glenn, Ruby, Hilda, Leland James “J.L.”, Esther Lepley, Chester, Virgil, William, Helen Reese, Marianna (Norris) Holton, Warren, Charles Jr., and Wilma (Auber) Hagen, and her son Steven and wife Linda Eckert.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family in her name for a donation to the Helping Hand. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
