Georganna Morris
(May 12, 1921 - February 3, 2018)

Georganna Meilke Morris, was born the second daughter of Alfred Willie Meilike and Eliza Jane (Nuzum) Meilike on May 12, 1921, in St. Charles, IA. She grew up on farms in Madison and Warren counties. She was a 1939 graduate from Martensdale High School and attended Simpson College where she obtained her teaching certificate. Before her marriage she taught in several one room rural schools in Madison and Warren counties. She married Harold Earl Morris on June 13, 1943 at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Martensdale. They moved to the farm west of Indianola on the day there were married and she remained there after Harold’s death in 1970 and until the sale of the house and 40 acres in 1980. The union was blessed with four children, Phyllis Ann, Jane Elizabeth, Gale Bender and Glen Earl.
Through the years Georganna was a daughter, sister, farm wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many. Georganna had a love of sewing and made a lot of clothes for her family over the years. She also loved her flowers, house plants, and cats. She was an active member of the Bevington Garden Club for over 70 years. She also served as a 4-H leader. She taught Sunday school at St. Pauls Lutheran Church for many years. She was a charter member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Indianola and helped to establish Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola, where she continued as a member until her death. Her church was very important to her and at one point there were 5 generations of her family attending Redeemer Lutheran Church. She taught school at Spring Hill, IA after Harold’s death for 2 years and worked for a time at the Indianola Wal-Mart, in the fabric department. Besides her sewing, she loved to crochet, quilt, make crafts, play bridge, do ceramics, and do bead work, making beautiful intricate necklaces. She was a board member of the Wallace Cemetery and helped sell plots for many years. Georganna posed for the statue in Grandmothers Garden, on the Warren County courthouse lawn. The statue was dedicated in November of 1989.
Georganna, 96, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018 at The Village in Indianola. Her family includes her children, Phyllis (William) McCown of Plainfield, IN, Jane (Ronald) Ellis, Gale (Carol) Morris, and Glen (Marilyn) Morris all of Indianola; grandchildren, E’Lynn Olsen of West Des Moines, Boyd (Julie) Ellis of Germantown, TN, Kara (David) Mitchell of Seymour, Tyler Ellis of San Juan Bautista, CA, Pam (Andy) Putz of West Des Moines, Marti (Brian) Meyer of St. Charles, Timmy (Denise) Morris of Indianola, and Scott Morris of Arizona; great-grandchildren, Paige, Logan, Lucas and Gabrielle Mitchell, Elizabeth Olsen, Madellin and Quinton Ellis, Madeline and Jesse Meyer and Riley and Morgan Morris; plus numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends, who she loved as family. Besides her parents, Georganna was preceded in death by her two sisters, Clara Jo Meilike (as an infant), Jean Nodland, and her husband Harold Morris.Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola with the visitation to be held one hour prior to services at the church.
