Robert C. Harbison, for 43 years the editor of The Sun, is dead. A distinguished figure in journalism of California and one of San Bernardino County’s most widely known and beloved citizen, he died at 11:50 a.m. yesterday [Oct. 21, 1937] at St. Bernardine’s hospital. He was 71 years old. At his bedside were his wife, Mrs. Ida Harbison, and his son, Robert L. Harbison, of San Francisco. Since last Wednesday when a sudden crisis developed and he lost consciousness, his condition had been critical. Early in the night, however, he rallied to recognize and talk with Mrs. Harbison and James A. Guthrie, a business associate. At midnight, he was able to recognize and talk with his son, who rushed south by airplane when Mr. Harbison’s condition became alarmingly worse. At 2:30 o’clock in the morning, he went into a coma induced by uremic poisoning and a complication of ailments. Death came quietly as he slept.
Enters Hospital for Heart Attack
Ill for nearly a year, Mr. Harbison entered the hospital Monday night after suffering his second heart attack within a few weeks. Although he rallied at times under medical treatment, his condition generally became steadily worse. During the last hours, heart stimulants were administered by his physician, Dr. P. M. Savage. Mr. Harbison was first stricken ill while in New York in April, 1935, attending the annual convention of the American Newspaper Publishers’ Association. He returned to San Bernardino and in June, 1935, entered the Good Samaritan hospital at Los Angeles where he underwent a serious operation. He recovered, although failing to regain his usual vigorous health, and resumed the writing of his column, “News and Views.”
