Cool – Levi Mills house, put up by his neighbors, is about ready for occupancy.

Indianola Herald, Indianola, IA, Thurs., Dec 10, 1891, p.3, col.7
Cool – Our community was shocked last Friday morning when the news came that the house of Mr. Levi Mills was consumed by fire and that he and his aged wife were burned with it. A little after twelve o’clock the neighbors saw the house on fire, but by the time they got there the roof and walls were falling in and nothing could be done to save the inmates; no water being near. It is supposed that they were under the influence of morphine as both used it. Grandma Mills has been an invalid for the past three years – never out of bed. She was a very intelligent old lady, well versed in and a constant reader of her Bible. Mr. Mills’ head was burned entirely off – in fact, both were burnt beyond recognition. They had no relatives near here. They have been residents of Squaw Township for 25 years and were well liked by all, and were followed to their grave at the south Christian Church by a large number of sympathizing friends.

An Aged Couple Burned to Death
Levi Mills and wife, each about 75 years of age, had been living alone near Medora, this county, in a house built by their neighbors to replace one destroyed by fire five or six years ago. Last Thursday night, shortly after midnight, some of Mr. Loper’s who live nearby, saw that the house was burning. They hastened over to try to render assistance, but were too late; the fire was beyond control and no one could enter. From the window they witnessed a fearful horror – Mr. Mills sitting in his chair burning. Mrs. Mills burned to death in bed. She had been an almost helpless invalid for years. He too was quite feeble but was able to go about some and must have been asleep when the fatal fire enveloped him or he would certainly have made some effort to save himself. They came here some 26 years ago and have since lived in the vicinity of Medora. They had no relatives here and had lived alone.
