Eliza Ann (Shupe) McFarland
(February 25, 1860 – March 2, 1937)

Mrs. McFarland Spent Life in Liberty Twp.
Dies at Age of 77 Years. Had Never Lived Over Four Miles from Liberty Center
Having passed her entire life in Liberty Township, never more than four miles from Liberty Center nor more than that from her own birthplace, Mrs. S. B. McFarland died at her home in Liberty Center March 2 at the age of 77 years and 5 days. Born Eliza Ann Shupe, she was the daughter of Isaac and Nancy Shupe. She was united in marriage to Samuel B. McFarland Nov. 9, 1881. To this union four girls were born, Adah May Mills, Josie Geraldine Lamb, Mina Belle Young and Edna Ella Freel. All are living except Adah who passed away Nov 30, 1920. Her daughter [i.e. Adah’s daughter], Lovilla Mills, has made her home with her grandparents since her mother’s death. Those left to mourn Mrs. McFarland’s passing are her husband, three daughters, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ida Davis of Anamosa, and two brothers, William of Sutherlin, Ore., and Clement of Lacona.
Received Red Cross Medal
She was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and enjoyed working in the Ladies Aid society so long as her health permitted. At the time of the World War she was awarded a red Cross service medal for the sewing she did for the boys. In the message which she left a few days before her death she said she had made her peace with God, wasn’t afraid to die and was ready and waiting to go. She often expressed the great joy she experienced by having all of her family at home with her. Mrs. McFarland was born on a farm four miles east of Liberty Center. When married she moved with her husband to a farm two miles from her birthplace. In 1899 they moved to Liberty Center. For a time the McFarlands operated a store and hotel in Liberty Center. The funeral was held at Liberty Center, Thursday at 1:30, conducted by the Rev. Reed Kessler. Burial was in Liberty Center Cemetery.
