Andrew Hastie Dies in Des Moines
The Tribune of Des Moines had the following notice of the death of Andrew Hastie of Carlisle.
Tribune – Hon. Andrew Hastie of Carlisle, died suddenly last Thursday morning [Nov. 3rd] at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Robison with whom he was visiting. Death came peacefully and without suffering. Mr. Hastie was born in Scotland in 1823 and was 87 years old at the time of his death. He came to America when a mere lad and is reckoned as one of Iowa’s pioneers. He preempted six sections of land in Warren County and for many years was the most prominent farmer and stock raiser on Scotch Ridge in that county. He was once a candidate for lieutenant governor on the anti-monopoly ticket. He surveyed the first rail-road across the state of Ohio, and built many miles of the Rock Island road in this state. Mr. Hastie is well known among the Scotch people of the state and was a member of the St. Andrew’s society in this city. His death will be mourned by a host of friends all over the state. Interment will be next Monday in Carlisle, where he has made his home for several years. He leaves a wife and several sons and daughters to mourn the death of a faithful husband and devoted father.
