Death of Honorable W. McMarshman
The many friend of ex-Senator McMarshman, late of Hartford in this county, will regret to learn that he died at Des Moines on Tuesday last. His disease we believe was consumption, with which he had been afflicted for some time past. The sad intelligence was conveyed to us by the following note which was received on Tuesday evening: Senate Chambers, Des Moines, Iowa, February 27, 1872, Editor Leader: Hon. W. McMarshman, Door-Keeper of the Senate, died this morning at 7 o’clock. His remains will be taken to Hartford for interment tomorrow. Yours truly, M. A. Dashiell
The deceased was widely known. In his day he was an active participant in politics and was accounted one of the best stump speakers in the country. We hope some one intimate with his past history will furnish us with an obituary notice for publication.

Rally at Sandyville – … In the evening the wide-awakes, with each a lady, marched through the streets of Sandyville, and at quarter past eight marched to the school-house, where the audience were addressed for one hour and a quarter, by Mr. McMarshman, of Hartford, in a strain of eloquence and arguments, far exceeding anything we ever before heard from him. There is an earnestness, and a moral power and force, about all of Mr. M.’s speeches which drives conviction into the hearts of erring democrats and he commands the respect of all parties. The Republicans of Sandyville raised a pole 141 feet high, on the morning of the Rally, from which floats the stars and stripes, and the names of our next President and Vice President – LINCOLN & HAMLIN.
