Opal Elaine Shipley
(February 5, 1929 - February 4, 2017)

Opal Elaine Shipley 87, a long-time resident of Carlisle, passed on February 4, 2017 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Funeral services for Opal will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle. A visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, prior to services at the funeral home. Opal was born February 5, 1929 in Bagley, Iowa to Vernon and Kitty Myers. Opal was united in marriage to Vernon E. Shipley on August 23, 1947. Opal worked as a homemaker, telephone operator and various secretarial jobs in Des Moines. Opal enjoyed spending time with family and friends, teaching, playing cards, and occasionally crab-eying. Opal and Vernon spent their winters in Donna, Texas enjoying bingo games, activities and country jam sessions. She had a passion and talent for making and decorating cakes and making birthdays extra special for friends, children and grandchildren. Opal is survived by her children Ronda (Dean) Fiser of Carlisle, Gene (Terrie) Shipley of Carlisle, Leigh (Scott) Carr of West Des Moines and Steven (Kerri) Shipley of Lake City, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Opal was preceded in death by her parents Vernon and Kitty Myers; husband, Vernon Shipley; and siblings, Mildred Zonona, Earl Myers and Lester Myers. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimers Association of Iowa.
