Clyde James Van Pelt
(December 5, 1925 - March 6, 2017)

Clyde James Van Pelt, 91, of Ankeny found peace on March 6, 2017 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. Funeral services for Clyde will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 13, 2017 at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle. A visitation will begin 1 hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Avon Cemetery. Clyde was born on December 5, 1925 in Norwalk, Iowa to Otto “Dick” and Kathryn(Clark)Van Pelt. Clyde assisted his father in operating a 320 acre farm in Leon, Iowa. He also worked odd jobs until he joined the United States Army in 1944-1946. Clyde went from PVT to PFC to CPL serving as squad leader with Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Clyde married Mary Elaine Buckingham on January 16, 1948. Clyde and Mary had 5 children; Alan, Susan, Ronal, Angela and Billy. Clyde was a farmer most of his life. In the early 1960’s he went to work for Jameson Construction alongside his brother in law and best friend, James Buckingham. In April of 1964 he went to work for John Deere Des Moines Works as a welder. Clyde retired in August 1987 and eventually started a business recycling vehicles. He loved going to the auction on Tuesdays. Later in Clyde’s time at the auction they would bring out a chair for him. Clyde realized that Bill was good at bidding on the vehicles. So Bill became the official bidder. Clyde is survived by his sons Alan(Shirley), Ron; daughters, Susie and Angela(Roger), 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; sister, Dorothy; brother, John; sister in laws, Joan(Davie), Dorothy, Rosetta and Gladys; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
