Glenn "Red" Crum, 90, of Carlisle died of lung cancer on Wednesday, April 9, surrounded by family and friends. He was born on March 8, 1924 in Levey, Iowa to Jacob and Nellie Ogden Crum. He was the youngest of 10 children and graduated from Carlisle High School in 1943. He married Diane Smith on October 5, 1957, and had 2 children. Red owned and operated Smith's DX Service Station and Truck Wagon Service and retired from Noah's Cleaners after working there for several years. Red had a gift and passion for music and enjoyed sharing it through his dance band on Saturday nights and playing at Shakey's Pizza Parlor. He developed his own circuit of playing the piano at 24 retirement centers around Central Iowa, which brought joy to many people. In his free time, he enjoyed being outdoors gardening and doing yard work for others. Red was baptized at the Avon Christian Church, was a member of the Carlisle Christian Church, and also played piano for the Chesterfield Christian Church. He was a member of the Lions Club and was inducted into the Carlisle High School Alumni Hall of Fame. He is survived by his son, Dan, of Carlisle; granddaughter, Erica Shannon; son-in-law, Steve Shannon, of West Des Moines; and extended family. He is preceded in death by his wife, Diane; daughter, Glenda Shannon; and his 9 siblings. A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 13 at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle from 2-4pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 14 at 2pm at the Carlisle Christian Church (305 Market Street). Memorial contributions can be made to the Carlisle Christian Church, Chesterfield Christian Church, or family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
