Michael Roy Moss
(October 11, 1947 - February 16, 2016)Services for Michael Roy Moss, 68, formerly of Indianola, who passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at home, will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, February 20 at the First Assembly of God Church, 1700 West 2nd Avenue, Indianola with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Mike was born October 11, 1947 in Oskaloosa, IA to Raymond and Juanita (Hartshorn) Moss and raised on a family farm by Harvey, IA with his brother Pat and sisters Raydene and Mahala. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1965, was president of the Knoxville FFA chapter his senior year and president of his local 4H club in 1964.
Mike moved to Indianola in 1965. He became a Judo and self-defense instructor teaching seven years of kid’s, women’s self defense and adult judo classes for the Indianola Parks and Recreation Department. Mike joined the Indianola Fire Department and within his 31 years of service served as Lieutenant, Captain, Rescue Captain and retired as Deputy Chief. He also worked as a medic and fireman at the Knoxville Iowa Race track for 10 years as an EMT-1. Mike instructed agricultural rescue and grain bin rescue at the Iowa State Fire School in Ames for 10 years, and serving as the lead instructor also taught auto extrication and grain bin rescue throughout the state for volunteer fire departments. He was an emergency rescue technician (ert) instructor and held a class for the Indianola Fire Department members. He was published in the International Magazine for Grain Millers in 2006 with innovative grain bin rescue techniques. Mike was a skilled hunter and spent his weekends during hunting seasons in the timber and fields. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Pat Moss. Survivors include his loving and caring wife and companion, Penney Moss; sons, Darren and Danny (Allison) Moss; sisters, Mahala Cox and Raydene DeJoode; step-children, Jodie (Dave) West, Kevin Auten, Angie (Mitch) Hennigar, Justin (Kristi) Bracelin, Stephanie and Chris Bracelin; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
