Frances Lee Stalter
(November 21, 1923 - February 21, 2016)

Frances Lee Stalter was born November 21, 1923, in Kansas City, MO, and passed away at Westview Care Center on Sunday, February 21, 2016, at the age of 92. She was the third of six children born to Henry and Esther (Lame) Broyles. Her family moved to the Medora area when she was a year old. After graduating from Indianola High School, she acquired a teaching certification and taught at several rural schools in Warren County.
On July 4th, 1942, Frances met Donald Stalter at the 4th of July celebration in Osceola. After a brief courtship, they were married on November 14, 1942. To this union 3 children were born: Allen, Michael and Shelley. In 1959, Don and Frances purchased a farm west of Medora where they raised their family. Frances was a hard worker. She did all aspects of farming from caring for the livestock to driving the tractors. Frances enjoyed planting a huge vegetable garden and sharing her bounty with family and friends. She remained on the farm after Don’s death in 1987 until her health declined and she moved to Indianola in 2013. Frances had busy hands and was always working on a project. She enjoyed keeping busy by stitching quilts, crocheting doilies and afghans, and embroidering tea towels which were given as birthday and Christmas gifts. She loved and collected over 1200 sets of salt and pepper shakers which she displayed in her home. Frances inherited her mother’s love of rocks and was always looking for another rock to pick up and add to her flower garden. She was excited to receive a 3 ton rock one Mother’s Day which was proudly displayed in her front yard. An excellent cook, she prepared many Sunday family dinners which included the family favorite, fried chicken. After Don’s passing, Frances enjoyed traveling with her sister Virginia, and brother Richard and his wife Virginia. They traveled from coast to coast including Alaska. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Stalter; daughter-in-law, Janice Stalter; and brothers, Victor, Junior and Richard Broyles. She is survived by her children, Allen (Rita) Stalter, Michael Stalter and Shelley (John) Lucas; grandchildren, Jodi (Britt) Sternquist, Melissa (Ryan) Casner, Elizabeth (Enderson) Stalter Bispo, Michelle (Jesse) Robbins, Donald (Venessa) Stalter, Brian (Courtney) Lucas; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Blake Casner, Gracie Lucas, Audrey Frances and Caleb Robbins, Michael Stalter and Quinton Bradley; sisters, Virginia Chambers and Lucille Henry and a host of other relatives and friends.
