Jimmie Lee Brittian
(February 3, 1929 - June 27, 2016)Jimmie (Jim) Lee Brittian, 87, passed away Monday, June 27, 2016 at Taylor House Hospice, Des Moines, IA after a 7 month battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A memorial service is planned for 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 1 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present one hour prior to services. Jim was born in Springfield, MO to Floyd and Florence (Earnhardt) Brittian. After graduating High School, he moved to the Missoula, MT area to build houses until he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War, serving with the 40th AAA and Hq Battery AAA Brigade from December 1950 to November 1952. After the war, he returned to Springfield where he began a over 40 year career with the National Cash Register (NCR) Company and met his wife of 62 years, Shirley Irene Clay. His employment with NCR involved moves to Garden City, KS, Salina, KS, Sioux City, IA, and Des Moines, IA where he retired as the district service manager in 1992.
Jim started building and flying radio-controlled airplanes in the late 1950s, and was a private pilot and a long-time member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, receiving the Wright Brothers Memorial Award in 1989 for building a Lancairsingle engine aircraft. In his retirement years he picked up the game of golf, playing at the Indianola Country Club until his illness in November. He was a talented mechanic, carpenter and woodworker who could make or fix just about anything, including the remodelingof several of their homes to the professional standards of Shirley. Shirley and family would like to express their appreciation to the medical professionals and staff at Medical Oncology and Hematology Associates, various floors at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine-Indianola, UnityPoint Home Health Care, and the Taylor House Hospice for their exemplary care and compassion during his illness.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jack. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Shirley, brother Floyd Jr. and sister Betty of Springfield, MO, son Scott (Stephanie) of Wichita, KS, daughter Jennifer (Bud) Walter of Indianola, and grandchildren Brad Brittian, Rebecca (Steve) Thomas, Brett Brittian all of Wichita, KS, Jonathan (Canna) Walter, Davenport, IA, Benjamin Walter, Minneapolis, MN, Rebecca (Eric) McNeely, Nolensville, TN, and Derek Walter, Phoenix, AZ as well as 5 great-grandchildren.
