James Brandon Couch
(October 29, 1969 - November 28, 2016)

James Brandon Couch, 47, of New Virginia, Iowa passed away on Monday, November 28th 2016. A visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, December 5 at Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland, Indianola, Iowa. His cremains will be laid to rest in the Calvary Cemetery in Churchville, Iowa on Tuesday, December 6 at 2 p.m.. Brandon was born October 29, 1969, in Des Moines, Iowa to Jim and Myrna (Sill) Couch. He grew up in Norwalk, graduating from Norwalk High School in 1988.
As a child, Brandon enjoyed riding his dirt bike on Saturday mornings, waking up his neighbors (who later became family members) trying to sleep in, hunting, and playing baseball on the homemade baseball field in his yard. In his adult life, Brandon enjoyed hunting deer with his son Mason, fishing with all of his Littles, boating with Littles, family and friends, and watching his Iowa Hawkeyes and the Dallas Cowboys from his recliner. In the nicer weather he enjoyed being outside playing catch with the Littles, it didn’t matter if it was football, baseball, bouncy balls, playing kick ball or wrestling. Anything with the Littles while they still were! He also greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends around the largest camp fire possible, especially during New Virginia Old Settlers where he would welcome everyone who stopped over. More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his family and children. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his absolute love for his family. In 1991, he joined the United States Navy and served on the USS Tarawa as a boiler tech during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Brandon earned his Shellback when he crossed the equator in September 17, 1992 in Perth, Australia. He was honorably discharged March of 1993.
He worked at a printing company for a while and decided it just wasn’t for him. So in 2002, he began work at Titan Tire in machine maintenance, curing, and fixing anything that needed it as well as joking around with his co-workers whenever the chance arose. Brandon met Katie when he was just a young man; she was the girl next door. They married on May 9, 1998, in Norwalk, Iowa, at the United Methodist Church. In 2000, they made their home in New Virginia where they went on to raise their family of six.
Brandon was a member of the United Steel Workers Local 164 Union, a New Virginia City Council Member since November 6, 2007, a Foster parent and an Adoptive parent. He is survived by his parents Jim and Myrna (Sill) Couch; his brother Ryan; his wife Katie; daughters Amanda (Jeremy Zwack), Haley, Jillian, and Samantha; his sons Mason and Alex; parents in law Sherman and Judy Wonderlin; nieces, Kelsey (Kris) Hentschel and Emily Couch; great nephew, Landon Hentschel; sister in law, Teri (Jeff) Link; nephews, Logan and Aiden; nieces, Isabela and Abigail; brother in law Adam (Tracy Hamilton) Smith; nephew Gavin Smith; brother in law, Ray Stepan; as well as many other family and friends who loved him.
