Pauline Harriet Hakeman
(April 23, 1922 - March 8, 2017)

Pauline Harriet (Briggs) Hakeman, the daughter of Paul and Eula (Hendrick) Briggs, was born April 23, 1922, in Sutherland, Iowa, and died March 8, 2017, at the age of 94, at The Village in Indianola, IA.
She received her entire education in the Sutherland, IA, school system, graduating as Valedictorian of the Class of 1940. A two-year Kindergarten-Primary degree was obtained from Iowa State Teachers’ College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, after which she taught second grade in Early, IA, before working with an insurance company in California, during the war. At the end of World War II, she returned to Sutherland and on June 2, 1946, was united in marriage to her high school classmate Rodney Hakeman.
The following year the family moved to Akron, IA, and in 1953, to Humboldt, IA, where Rod coached and taught high school mathematics for 37 years.
Pauline was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and various church circles. For four and a half years she and Rod served as Senior MYF counselors, and also delivered Meals on Wheels for several years.
After Rod’s retirement in 1985, they spent portions of the next 13 winters with Pauline’s sister Eleanor in Lakewood, CA.
She is survived by her son, Steven and his wife Lynn; granddaughters Jennifer (Jamie) Bradfield, and Heidi (Bryan) Labertew; and great-granddaughters Elaina and Keira Labertew, all of Indianola, IA, as well as many relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were Rod, her husband of 58 years; her parents; a four-day-old brother, Fay; sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and Bud Ellis; and brother- and sister-in-law Harold and Fay Hakeman. Inurnment at Waterman Cemetery, Sutherland, will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Pauline’s name to Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt.
