Obituary – Homer Irving Brent
Homer Irving Brent was born May 30, 1847, at Roseville, Warren county, Illinois, and died at his home in Indianola, January 2, 1920, aged seventy-two years, seven months and two days. When the great Civil war began he wanted to enlist as a soldier in defense of the union, but was not allowed to do so because he was not of the age required by army regulations. At last, though late in the war, the opportunity came to him and on the fourteenth day of February, 1865, he enlisted in Company H, 47th Illinois volunteer infantry. He was mustered into the service and immediately went to the front. He participated in all the movements and engagements of his regiment until the twenty-first day of January, 1866, when he was honorably discharged at Selma, Alabama. In the year 1872, he came to Iowa, being then about twenty-five years of age, and settled in Ringgold county, where he engaged in farming. In the year 1907 he moved from his farm near Diagonal, Iowa, to Indianola, where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. On the first day of April, 1875, at Mt. Ayr, Iowa, he was married to Miss Nancy Lorimer. To this union six children were born: Fred, who lived in this city; James, who died at the age of seven years; Lida, now Mrs. Dain and Martin, both of Reading, Minnesota; Pearle, now Mrs. Kyle, of Shannon City, Iowa, and Myrtle, now Mrs. Miller, of Indianola. Comrade Brent was a member of James Randolph Post No. 116, G.A.R., and was held in high esteem by all of his comrades. At the election of officers of the year 1920, held one week ago last Saturday, he was elected senior vice-commander and he lived, would have been installed into that office Wednesday, January 7, 1920. He was converted at a meeting held near his country home and in the year 1891 united with the Methodist Episcopal church, transferring his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church of this city when he moved here. He was a quiet, undemonstrative man, but lived and enjoyed his religion and love the church. In conversation with one of his comrades not long ago, he spoke of his conversion as being clear, positive and happy and rejoiced in the fat of knowing that God had so wonderfully saved him, and that great and blessed experience was a strength and comfort to him as he increased in age. He loved his home and family. Last New Year’s evening he had all the members of his family residing in Indianola at his home to eat their New Year’s dinner together and little did his children think that, when the moment for separation came, it was to be the last time they would hear his cheery “Good Night.” But it was thus that God, who doeth all things well, willed it. May they all serve and love the Savior whom he served and loved, and then, in the Heavenly home, they will be greeted with his joyful, “Good Morning.” Last Friday morning, when his health and vigor never seemed to be stronger, he was suddenly stricken with neuralgia of the heart and in less than an hour of most intense suffering, even while he physician was trying to give him relief, he was not because God had taken him to the home in Heaven where there is no suffering, no death, and where all tears are wiped away forever. There are left to mourn his departure, his beloved wife, the faithful and loving companion of his manhood for nearly forty-five years; two sons and three daughters; three sisters and one brother. Also the comrades of James Randolph Post No.116, G.A.R., and a wide circle of friends by whom he was highly regarded and whose memory they will cherish. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church of this city last Sunday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. Fred N. Willis, D.D., assisted by Rev. Fred Harris, in the presence of a large congregation. Interment was made in the Indianola cemetery.
