Joseph C. Higens
Joseph C., son of Bluford and Nancy Higens was born in Sinclair county, Illinois, September 25, 1846. When two years of age his parents came to Mahaska county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. At the age of 17 years he enlisted in Company “C” 47 Reg. Iowa Inf., at Davenport, Iowa, in which he served until the end of the war. He was honorably discharged the 28th day of September, 1864. On April 2nd, 1871, he was married to Jennie White. To this union were born two daughters, who, with the mother, preceded him. On December 12th, 1875 he was again married to Margaret Johnson. To this union were born eight children, five sons and three daughters, two daughters having died in infancy. Those living are Charles H. Sherman, Edd and Clyde of Spring Hill, Iowa; Fred, of Arcola, Sask., Canada, and Edith E. Vancil, of Norwalk, Iowa. April 1895, he with his family moved to the farm south of Spring Hill, Iowa where he resided until the time of his death, January 28, 1920, at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 3 days. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, five sons, one daughter, eight grand-children, two sisters, three brothers and a host of friends. IN early manhood he united with the Christian church. On coming to Spring Hill there bring no Christian church at that time, he united with the M.E. church, and remained a member until the time of his death. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, I.O.O.F., and M. W. A. He was very patient in his sickness and often wished to the time to come when he would suffer no more. “A precious one from us has gone, a voice we loved is still. A place is vacant in our home, which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled the boon His love had given, and though the body moulders here, the soul is safe in Heaven.” Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Spring Hill, Friday, January 30, 1920, conducted by Rev. Gordon, of Des Moines, assisted by Rev. Zumsteg. The body was laid to rest in the Webb cemetery.
