(June 25, 1822 – March 11, 1904)

The Advocate Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Thursday, March 17, 1904, p.3
Funeral of Mrs. S. R. Lindsay
The funeral services of Mrs. Maria Bratton Lindsay took place at the United Presbyterian church of Indianola, Tuesday, March 15, and were conducted by the Rev. Dr. J. M. Hamilton, of Reinbeck, Ia., nephew of the deceased, assisted by Rev. J. T. Hopkins. There was a large number of friends and immediate relatives present, among whom was Rev. S. R. Lindsay, of St. Louis. The services consisted of prayer, and address by Dr. Hamilton and a few favorite psalms. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery of this city and by the side of her husband, S. R. Lindsay. Mrs. Lindsay was born on a farm near Fairview, Guernsey county, Ohio, June 25, 1822. Her first marriage was to James Chidister, June 25, 1840, whose death occurred about a year later. Her second marriage was to Samuel B. Lindsay, which occurred Oct 22, 1844. The first four years were spent on a farm near Fairview, Ohio, the next two years were spent in Fairview, and the next six in Loudonberry, Ohio. In the fall of 1856 she came west with her family to Homestead, Rock Island county, Ill., and the spring of 1858 moved to a farm near Knoxville, Ia. In the spring of 1860 she came to Scotch Ridge, Warren county, where she remained until the spring of 1866, when permanent residence was made on the farm four miles northwest of this city, where her death occurred Friday, March 11, at 3:15 p.m. in the presence of her son, Charles, and wife and a friend. The end came suddenly as the result of heart failure. To her first marriage was born one child, Frances A., who became Mrs. Wm. A. Kramer, and whose death occurred during the present year. Ten children were born to the second union, seven sons and three daughters. The daughters Lydia, Mrs. Martha Harriet-Brown and Mrs. Rebecca Jane McElroy, all have passed away and of the sons, David Marshall, John Henry and Andrew, all died in infancy, and the remaining four are located as follows: William T. at Oxford, Neb., Rev. Samuel L. at St. Louis, Mo, Hon. James P. at North Tonawanda, N.Y., and Charles B. at the old Homestead near this city. Mrs. Lindsay was a life-long member in the Associate Reformed and United Presbyterian churches, and her life was characterized by a faithfulness and Christian fortitude. Her chosen domain was the home, which ever received her unfailing devotion. Strong and brave in the midst of trial, quick to adapt herself to changed conditions and ever solicitous for the physical, spiritual and financial welfare of her children, she bound them to her with a bond indissoluble only on death. Write – Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Yea saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labors and their works do follow them.
