Jesse Embree
(Dec 11, 1828 - May 16, 1888)

The Advocate-Tribune, Indianola, IA, Thursday, May 17, 1888,p.3
Jesse Embree died early Wednesday morning, after a slow, lingering illness. To use his own expression, he “was not sick but just gradually wore out.” He was another of the old settlers, whose ranks have been thinning out so rapidly of late. He was a native of Indiana, coming to Iowa in 1849. He lived one year at Oskaloosa, but for the last thirty-eight years his home has been in Indianola. Half this time or more he followed his trade, plastering, but his bodily infirmity forced him into lighter occupations and for many years past he has served the public as constable and tax collector, neither of which occupations is calculated to make a man popular. Though in these vocations he was forced to many unpleasant duties we have never heard it said of him that he was unfaithful to his trusts. No matter how unpleasant the duty it was always faithfully performed. He made his home with his brother Amos, whose family did all that kind friends could do to make his last days pleasant. The funeral will be held at two o’clock this p.m. Services at the residence of Amos Embree, conducted by the Masonic fraternity, of which he had long been a member.
