PAUL LATHROP THOMPSON, Ankeny, formerly New Virginia

Paul Thompson, age 89, died December 22 at The Bridges in Ankeny.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, December 24 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to services at Overton Funeral Home.

Paul was born February 27, 1927 near Shannon City in Union County, son of Merrell and Loraine (Lathrop) Thompson. He was raised near Lorimor, where he graduated from high school.

He married Leola Mundell on June 6, 1948, in Indianola. Together they had four children. They lived in Winterset and Des Moines before purchasing a farm near New Virginia in 1953, where they stayed until moving to Chariton in 2007. Following Leola's death in 2011, Paul moved to the Lakeside Village near Panora, and this past summer, to The Bridges in Ankeny.

Paul spent most of his life working in the construction business in Des Moines, while farming nights and weekends. He loved farming, especially raising Angus cattle. He was a dedicated husband and father, and active in several churches throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed spending time with his family, vegetable gardening, and sports.

He is survived by his son Paul Craig (Connie) Thompson of Atlanta, GA; daughters Susan Thompson (Larry Babcock) of Panora, Nancy Thompson of Des Moines, Rebecca (Mark) Felderman of Ankeny; seven grandchildren, Laurie and Chrissy Thompson (Damien Daigle) of Atlanta, Marshall (Emily) Felderman of Davenport, Samuel Felderman of Dubuque, William and Regina Felderman of Ankeny, and Matthew Thompson of Des Moines; three great-grandsons, Graham, Hudson and Clive Felderman of Davenport; a sister, Merlene (Dale) Dovenbarger of Benedict, Nebraska; and nieces and nephews.
