Milo Motor newspaper, Milo, Iowa, Thursday, Jan 13, 1955, front page
Obituary – Mrs. Mary J. Clay
Mary Jane Miller Clay, daughter of James F. and Juliet Miller, was born on Nov. 21, 1869, in Fremont Township, Clarke County, Iowa, and died at her home in New Virginia on Dec 22, 1954 at 85 years of age. On Nov. 15, 1896, she was married to Fred W. Clay. They had three children; Ruby Freeman, Lincoln Nebr., Archie Clay, Indianola, and Ruth Norris, New Virginia. Mrs. Clay had lived in Fremont Township, until she moved to New Virginia nine years ago. She taught in rural schools of Clarke County for several years and remembered all her pupils. She was known as “Aunt Janie” by many others than her own nieces and nephews. When she was a young girl, she joined the Methodist Church at a time when services were held at the Jamison schoolhouse. Later her membership was transferred to the Methodist Church in New Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband and by four brothers: Henry, Pearle, Warren, and Fred. Surviving are her three children, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. W. F. Dean, Osceola, two sisters in law, Ina Miller, Kansas City, and Maude Miller, Rochester, N. Y., and several nieces and nephews. A tribute by one of her long time friends is, “There was no half way in her Christian life. Right was right. Always she lived by her Bible. As Proverbs 31: 28 says, Her children rise up and call her blessed. And when the call came for her to come home, there was no moaning at the bar, not a sigh, not a murmer, set one rippling of the waves, just peace be still.” Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in New Virginia on Dec 25 with Rev. Leroy Moore officiating. Burial was at the Liberty Cemetery in Clarke County.
