Gladys Ameila Herberger, a 47 year resident of Indianola, quietly slipped away during a peaceful sleep at Good Samaritan Society nursing home at the age of 89 years, 7 months, 21 days on Sunday, July 19, 2009, at 2 a.m. having been born Wednesday, December 17, 1919, at Springvale, Humboldt County, Iowa to Carl Emmanuel Johnson and Ester Elizabeth Segrid Gustafson. She was able to remain in her home for 89 1/2 years of her life, with home health care providers for the last two and a half years.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Henry William Herberger, by 21 years, 1 month, 4 days. She was also preceded in death by her father, mother, and siblings; Melvin Carl Johnson, Gloria Kendall Twilliger, Glenda Maureen Kendall Halsrud, and Joey Kendall.
She is survived by four children: Warren Lee (Nataliya) Burge, a retired attorney of Indianola, Iowa and son of Elmer (Joe) Burge; Carla Beth (Kevin) Hollenkamp, a community health nurse of Spencer, Iowa and twin sons Dean William (Nealia) Herberger and Dennis Charles (Linda) Herberger, owners of the family's third generation Herberger Construction Company of Indianola, Iowa.

She is survived by thirteen great grandchildren: Megan and Brandy Burge; Gavin and Tate Hollenkamp; Emily Allen; Anastasia and Sasha Herberger; Logan and Brayden Plourde; Alexis and Tristan Hill; Jayda Henderson; Isabelle Karwal.
Gladys will be long remembered with loving kindness for her saving every nickel, exact record keeping, wasting not a stamp, daily reading of each complete newspaper with a magnifying glass, large gardens, family 4th of July steak dinners, family Thanksgivings, Christmas Holiday meals, remembering every birthday and Christmas with a card and check and for going on strike when upset with Walt, until Alzheimer's disease slowed her down in her later years when she was then helped by her sons Dennis and Dean in her affairs, farm and home. Gladys loved the fair, family reunions, being taken along on trips, including one to Hawaii with her daughter Carla, and especially being taken out to eat in the "best car in the world", her own. She and Walt were founding members of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Services for Gladys Amelia Herberger will be held 10:30 am., Friday, July 24, 2009, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola with burial following in the Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa. A luncheon will follow commital services in the Redeemer Lutheran Church basement. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 23 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church.
