John Calvin Curry
(March 17, 1808 - May 5, 1882)

The Advocate Tribune newspaper, Thursday, May 11, 1882, p.8, col.4
CURRY – John Calvin Curry died at his residence in Milo, Iowa, May 5th, 1882, at the age of 74 years.
The deceased was born in Augusta county, Virginia, in 1808: emigrated to Hancock county, Indiana, about 1830, where he was married to Martha VanGilder in 1849. They, with their family, removed to Illinois and settled in Knox county, where they lived until they came to Iowa in 1866. His energetic pioneer nature prompted him to undergo the hardships and privations of the new country rather than the more substantial comforts of the old. At the age of 11 years he became a member of the M. E. church, and by an upright life has exemplified the true principals of the Christian life in an eminent degree, his life being one of self sacrifice, devoted largely to the interests of God and humanity. The sick and needy were to him a constant care, and with a cheerful, generous heart and liberal hand he always administered to their wants. In the different communities where he has lived he has secured the confidence and esteem of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, while he has aroused the enmity of very few. Through the greater part of his Christian life his church duties have been of more than an ordinary nature, thus bring him in contact with men of eminent piety and ability, and many are the pleasing remembrances of former associations which have clustered around his memory during his declining years; and he was comforted with the hope of reunion, and eternal rest just across on the other shore.
