The family moved to a suburb of Des Moines before finally moving to Des Moines when Don was 5 or 6 years of age. Don grew up in Des Moines.
Don married Helen Riddle in 1939 and they were married for over 70 years. To this union three children, Caroline, Marilynn and Don were born. Don was a truck driver for most of his career.

Don had many special highlights throughout his life with going on the First WWII Honor Flight of Iowa topping the list. He had too many others to mention.
