Services for Gladys Lucile Chumbley, 87, who died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Indianola Good Samaritan in Indianola, will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Indianola with burial following in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Gladys Lucile Smith was born August 21, 1921 to Andy J. Smith and Effie Milligan Smith on a farm near Leroy, Minnesota. When she was seven years old she moved with her parents and two sisters and two brothers to a farm ten miles southeast of Indianola. A sister was born 3 years later. She attended Lawrenceburg Country School and graduated form Liberty Center High School in 1940. She attended Simpson College and taught at Lawrenceburg and Culpepper schools in Warren County. She also taught at Gurnsey and Paton schools. Gladys worked at the Coast to Coast Store in Indianola for two years. In January 1948, Gladys went to work for Hyde Store (later Hy-Vee). She worked there 34 years as checker and later bookkeeper. She retired in January 1982 and was a volunteer at Helping Hand for 13 years.
She was married to Alvor B. Chumbley April 9, 1958. In November 1956 she joined the First Baptist Church in Indianola, where she taught Sunday school. She also served in various offices including deaconess, board of Christian education, circle chairwoman, ABW treasurer and helped with funeral dinners.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvor on February 28, 1966; parents; brother, Gerald C. Smith in October 1988; sister, Catherine Porter Ruth in September 2005; sister- in-law, Jean Smith in November 2002.
She is survived by sisters, Freda Boucher of Ankeny and Meda Lamb of Des Moines; brother, Glen and his wife, Jeanette of Indianola; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great friends.
Visitation will be held 3 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, September 15 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
