Russell James Howe, 77, of Johnston died of a stroke at Bishop Drumm Care Center there Friday, March 2, 2001. Services were held March 6 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Milo, with burial at Belmont Cemetery there.

Mr. Howe was born in Milo and had lived in Des Moines most of his life before moving to Johnston three years ago. He had been a clerk of the U.S. Postal Service and was a Navy veteran of World War ll. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed golfing.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine of Des Moines; three sons, Kevin of Johnston, George of Clive and Dennis of Brighton, Mich.; a sister, Ada Stoner of Oskaloosa; two brothers, Homer of Indianola and Charles of Rogers, Ark.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Mosher Funeral Home in Milo handled arrangements.
