Services for Lawrence Arthur Holden, 76, who died Sunday, July 24, 2011, will be 11 a.m., Monday, August 1 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services.

Lawrence was born March 23, 1935 in Des Moines and lived in Knoxville until moving to Sandyville in 1948. In 1949, he took over taking care of the milking cows and feeding hogs for his step dad who had polio and was confined. Lawrence attended grade school in Sandyville and graduated from Indianola High School in 1954. After high school, he worked on a highway survey crew and a construction crew building bridges.

Lawrence entered the United States Marine Reserves December 12, 1953 then reported for active duty on July 4, 1958. While in the Marine’s, he was stationed at Okinawa, Japan, Inchon, Korea, Taiwan, Hawaii, Quantico, VA and 29 Palms, CA. He was in the 3rd 8 inch Howitzer Battery and was Battery AMO NCO.

After the service he worked at Farming and Custom Combining then in 1966, he went to work at Armstrong Rubber Co and retired after 29 years.

Lawrence served as Sandyville Marshall, 30 years as Mayor and was on the town city council. He was also a member of the AMVETS Post 143, American Legion Post 165, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4123, and Marine Corps Leagues Saluting Rifles. He was involved with conducting military services for Marine Corps Veterans and participated in the Color Guard in parades for 25 years for Amvets. Lawrence served as Post Commander and Post Adjutant and Financial Officer, 1980 to 1981, served as AMVET 6th and 7th District Commander, Larry Nearing Detachment United States Marine Corps, and also served as 6th District Adjutant and Financial Officer for 15 years. He was Adjutant and Pay Master for Hawkeye Detachment Marine Corps League and Amvet Post Adjutant and Finance Officer for 25 years.

Lawrence is survived by his sisters, Patty (Richard) Swenson of Lagrand, OR, Sheery (Red) VanPelt of Indianola and Judy (Merle) Croy of Bismark, ND; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy and William Sandy.
