Funeral services for Walter Sylvester Hoch, 79, will be Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lacona. A vigil service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Lacona, where family will receive friends until 8 p.m. Interment will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Walter was born October 20, 1928 in Minnesota to Clem and Agnes Hoch. He was drafted into the United State Army in 1951 at the age of 22. He served in Germany and Korea.

After returning home in 1953 Walter farmed and worked for the Rock Island Railroad, then bought a farm north of Lacona where he retired after 30 plus years.

He married Esther Anthony in September 1967, and out of this marriage they had one son Curtis. Walter enjoyed fishing, coon hunting, square dancing, auctions, and spending time with his wife and family. He would spend winters in Arizona for several years after retiring.

Walter passed away on August 23 at the Griffin Nursing Center. Walter was preceded in death by his parents Clem and Agnes Hoch; his wife Esther; a sister Julia Scheve Snyder; and a brother Marvin.

He is survived by sisters: Lillian (James) Thill of Lacona, Luella Nickelson of Indianola, Evelyn (Red ) Rogers of Olpe, KS, Carolyn (Bernard) Wallace of Knoxville, and Marilyn (Vane) Orey of Indianola; brothers: Clemmie (Leona) Hoch of Bauer, Kenneth (Sheryl) Hoch of Lacona, Dean (Marylee) Hoch of Lacona, and Gene Hoch of Des Moines; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
